The Class 801 Super Express is Hitachi's replacement for the ageing Intercity 125 and Intercity 225 fleets operating on the East Coast and Great Western Mainlines.
The East Coast Franchise will receive thirty 9-car train sets and twelve 5-car train sets, with the Great Western Franchise receiving twenty one 9-car sets.

The Class 801 is being produced in 5 car and 9 car configurations and is planned to enter revenue earning service in 2017. Initial construction is being carried
out in Japan, with construction being moved to Newton Aycliffe upon completion of Hitachi's new purpose built facility which will provide jobs for up to 730 employees.
