The Class 222 was ordered by Midland Mainline as a replacement for their Class 170 Turbostars on services from London St. Pancras.

27 units were built at Bombardier's Bruges plant in Belgium. Delivery commenced in 2003.

The units work on the Midland route, from London St. Pancras to Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield. There are 3 configurations, with 4, 5 or 7 vehicles per set.

The units originally belonged to Midland Mainline and Hull Trains, however since 2007 all Meridians have been operated by East Midlands Trains.
